OK, enough of the marketing business, lets get down to the details of the article, shall we.

Lets start with a fictitious person. Let’s call her Mary Smith (I know – no imagination). Mary Smith it is…

Mary owns her own small Internet Home Business selling all sorts of gaming consoles and widgets online.

Mary has a problem though; her business isn’t doing so well. She’s having one heck of a time getting ranked in the major search engines and her advertising budget is getting wiped out because her Pay-Per-Click ad programs aren’t generating the paying customers she had hoped for.

Just a quick caveat before I get started here…. It’s outside the scope of this article to go into any sort of detail on Pay-Per-Click advertising, “Adwords” type programs, etc. If you’d like to know more specifics about those types of programs and programs like them, simply subscribe to my newsletter or send me an email and I’d be happy to explain them….

OK – back to Mary and her problem…

Mary’s top selling item is a national brand gaming console.

If I presented a challenge to you to get Mary’s website in the top of the search engines for her particular key words without driving her into bankruptcy and while competing with a nationally known top branded website, do you think you could do it?

You’d probably think I was silly to even try. After all, how are you going to compete with companies with multi-million dollar advertising campaigns proven to drive thousands of paying customers to their websites every month?

Well, to be honest with you, I’m not only going to show you how to do it, I’m going to show you how to do it and effectively get paid to do it.

It’s all about reverse engineering your way to the top.

Full disclosure here….are we going to get the number 1 spot on Google for….say… “Sony Playstation”…. No, we’re not. Not unless you have a few hundred thousand $ to spare every month on CPA and other PPC programs.

But we are going to rank, and we are going to increase our business – maybe even ten-fold by using a few simple and proven techniques.

When we were kids and we wanted to know how a particular widget worked, what did we do?

Most of us probably disassembled the widget and tried to put it back together again.

Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to do with our competitor’s web sites and their advertising programs.

After all, national brands have virtually unlimited advertising budgets relative to the small guys.

They can afford to be creative, try new things, tweak existing programs, run parallel programs, site test and split test numerous ad copy techniques.

Can we do all of this, well maybe, probably over time.

Buy why bother, why reinvent the wheel.

We don’t have to outsmart the big guns…we just have to capture a small sliver of their market share.

Capture a tiny sliver of a major brand’s market share and you just went from 123 Main Street to the top of Wall Street and onto 123 Easy Street. I’ll see you at the Club at the Marina. Just look for the 137 foot Burger Boat. You’ll find me up on the flybridge

Let’s start with our main competitor’s web site and start breaking it apart.

Go to Google.com and type in your particular keywords or phrase (any words someone would use if they were searching for the products you sell.).

Find the top 2 listings (non-paying spots) and click on their sites. Chances are they’re more similar than you think.

Look for the following things:

  1. Look at how the sites are structured.
  2. How is their web site laid out?
  3. Is their website easy to read, is it cluttered with all kinds of items?
  4. Are there several examples of those “key words” you just typed in?
  5. Are those “key-words” actually in their domain name (e.g. – www.”keywords”-widgets.com). Just a note here… don’t think for a second you should include the “actual” national brand name in your own domain name. That’s a sure-fire route to disaster and the end of your hard work and website. Unless of course you can match that brand name’s legal budget. They don’t have to win the lawsuit; they just have to bankrupt you in the process. Think about that in all your legal affairs – it’s easier to play on the straight and narrow.
  6. Are there lots of useful pages on their website with lots of links to additional information?
  7. Does their website have lots of support pages?

I think you get the idea. Take the best examples above from their websites and incorporate them into your own. They’ve already spent the money on “Search Engine Optimization”-SEO, learn from their techniques for free and implement them on your own site.

That flashing smiley face on your home page…. You can remove that now.

Instead, put a link to your blog where you have support pages describing the benefits of your product.

OK, website redone…..

That will surely help our search engine rankings for our little Internet Home-Based Business.

Total cost – about 2 days of active research.

How much will it pay us – undoubtedly many times over in higher search engine rankings.

Now onto PPC (Pay-Per-Click), CPA (Cost Per Action) and other pay-for-action type advertising.

This is where it gets interesting… in fact you may just have to stay tuned for my next article ‘cause I think we’re going to run out of time on this one….

Let’s go about the same exercise we did above.

Do a search for your product key words on a major search engine.

Let’s take a look at the “sponsored ads” this time.

These are the companies that are “paying” to be placed at or near the top or along the right hand column in your search results.

Same concept here only this time we’re going to tear apart their advertising.

What words do they use in their headline? They only have about 2-3 sentences to really grab your attention and get you to click on their link.

And for every person that clicks that link, they’re paying money – sometimes LOTS of money.

So the big companies know what works best. They know what taglines to use to get you to click that link.

They know exactly which buzz words and action verbs to use and when to use them.

Learn from them and use those same techniques and your PPC and CPA type ad results will skyrocket.

Here’s a little secret for you – think you have to compete with a major brand in a bidding war for their key words on the major search engines?

Well you don’t.

Do you think you need to be placed number 1 on the top of Google.com sponsored ads which probably sees 50 million unique eye balls every month?

That’s ludicrous because you don’t. We probably couldn’t afford to get that spot anyway.

Let’s start small here and work our way up… slowly.

Let’s take some of those “killer’ ad techniques we just learned from our competitors and bid for those key words on smaller search engines and websites.

Let’s start to dominate those smaller sites, and guess what – just by the nature of doing that, the big search engines WILL reward us with more traffic. Trust me.

Go to sites like www.goclick.com, www.pulse360.com, and www.lycos.com.

Bid for words on these sites and pay a fraction of the cost the majors would charge you.

Do you need 50,000 searches a day? No – get a few thousand targeted leads a day and you’re on your way to sure-fire success.

This could increase your click rates like crazy, in effect PAYING YOU to advertise.

After all, that’s the whole point right…

  1. Increase click through rates.
  2. Increase Conversion rates.
  3. And run a profitable advertising campaign, thus paying you to advertise.

Dominate slowly.

Slow and sure wins every time. You can trust me on that one.

    Makes for a pretty nice day I’d say.

    If someone were to ask me to describe the perfect job, that is surely the answer I would give them.  A “job” where you can write from anywhere, anytime you want all the while building your home-based Internet affiliate marketing business.

    And that, my dear friends is why I love this business and why I will continue writing about it and helping others to enjoy the same freedoms mentioned above in their own home-based business.
